    Already parts of the world suffer from lack of water, and with increasing demand it's expected to get worse. To better understand and predict drought, thirty universities are collaborating in a multidisciplinary effort called the Shale Hills Project. Among the studies, is field research following the life cycle of water along the Susquehanna River Basin. With support from the National Science Foundation, civil engineer Chris Duffy and his team at Penn State are tracking several aspects of rainfall to better understand the relationship between the flow of water, drought prone areas, and urban populations.

    A rip current is a narrow, fast-moving channel of water that starts near the beach and extends offshore through the line of breaking waves. If a swimmer gets caught in a rip current, the best thing they can do is stay calm. The current will not pull a swimmer underwater, but it will pull them away from shore. A swimmer caught in a rip current should float and wave for help. Do not try to swim back to shore or against the rip current. Part of the "Danger Zone" series.

    Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, on this morning, Moko is rowing relentlessly to bring back the barge as Mei-Lei sleeps. Suddenly the current shirts, he can't seem to make the oar move at all. He wakes Mei-Lei so she can help him row, but it is no use, the barge starts moving in the opposite direction. In the distance they notice a fisherman and try to call out to him, but he is too far and cannot hear them. Beyond a huge boulder they see a forest and start rowing furiously in its direction. Finally ashore, Moko and Mei-Lei think that the sea still had another secret in store for them, this new part of Mei-Lei's island.

    There is a massive southern ocean current almost two miles below the ocean's surface. Recent measurements found it’s the strongest current ever recorded at this depth and transports 40 times as much water as the Amazon River.     It started as a project for long term space survival, when NASA estimated that crews headed to or living on Mars would spend 80% of their waking hours farming. But, with support from the National Science Foundation, research into a leaf sensor that could “call in” with its vital statistics morphed into technology that can help farmers on this planet. The goal is to save water by directly measuring a plant’s moisture level.

    The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydro-electric dam in the world. Yet questions abound over environmental and social issues, not to mention the logistic problems of moving ships up and down the river. An ingenious system of ship locks has gone towards solving that problem, echoing the techniques of Banaue farmers in the Philippines who mastered the art of managing water over two thousand years ago.

    Deep in Southern Mexico's jungle, the Villa Luz limestone caves support an ecosystem that thrives in a highly poisonous, acidic environment. This rare type of cave is found in few spots on Earth. Geologists and biologists wear gas masks and protective outerwear to explore the caves. All life forms, from microbial colonies to spiders, fish and bats, are interdependent upon the toxic soup of water, sulphur-oxide and hydrogen monoxide for survival.

    In the first image, an oxygen atom is shown with six valence electrons. Four of these valence electrons form pairs at the top and right sides of the valence shell. The other two electrons are alone on the bottom and left sides. A hydrogen atom sits next to each the lone electron of the oxygen. Each hydrogen has only one valence electron. An arrow indicates that a reaction takes place. After the reaction, in the second image, each unpaired electron in the oxygen joins an electron from one of the hydrogen atoms so that the valence rings are now connected together. The bond that forms between oxygen and hydrogen can also be represented by a dash.

    In the Rosebud River valley, an hour east of Calgary, the water in many homes can be lit on fire. Everyone agrees there's gas in the water. Few agree on why. At Fiona Lauridsen's farm, just outside the hamlet of Rosebud, showering has become a dangerous activity. Fiona and her family developed skin burns from simply taking a shower and Fiona claims that EnCana, Canada's largest natural gas company is responsible. She claims that EnCana has contaminated the aquifer by drilling (fracking) for coal bed methane, a new source of natural gas extraction that often uses chemicals for drilling. Yet in the hamlet, where the Rosebud Theatre is a popular tourist attraction and graciously sponsored by EnCana, most residents refuse to even talk about burning water, for fear of harming the tourist industry.
